We are very proud Openspace has won the 2023 GPCA Environmental Sustainability Award for our investment in @Octopus Indonesia.
We are grateful to GPCA (Global Private Capital Association) for recognizing our commitment to environmental sustainability as we strive to back companies driving positive change across Southeast Asia.
About Octopus: Transforming Waste Management in Indonesia
Octopus, launched in 2021, has revolutionized waste management as the first platform offering an end-to-end recyclable waste logistic solution. Since our investment in 2022, Octopus has achieved remarkable growth—6 times in topline revenue while maintaining a net margin profitability of 5%.
Octopus has built an app that allows households and businesses to signal when they have recyclables ready for pickup. Their end-to-end platform provides a solution for recycling industries to acquire their materials in the most efficient way by involving informal sectors. With 500,000 registered users across twelve cities in Indonesia, Octopus has not only enhanced recycling efforts but also uplifted the lives of 26,000 individuals as Pelestari (waste collectors), 14,000 of whom are women, while improving their working conditions and collecting up to 1,700 tons of recyclable items monthly.
A special thanks to Gunnar Stork, Senior Director at DEG for accepting the award on our behalf during the annual GPCA Investors Meeting in London last week.
